Description

The Svētupe River is a 47 km long river in the Western part of Vidzeme flowing from the Northern part of the Dūņezers Lake of Limbaži and joining the Gulf of Riga by Svētciems. The river's drop is about 1 m/km. In the upper course, the Svētupe River flows in shallow paludified valley, in the middle course — in up to 10 m deep valley, in the lower course — along the seashore. About 4 km long Jaunupe river links the lower course of the Svētupe River with the Salaca River. In the river basin, there are many forests and

large marshes. It is possible that the river has gained its name from the former well- known Liv Sacrificial Caves situated at the very bank of the river. Besides it is also possible that the name of the river is related to some ancient and nowadays unknown border function. There are several bridges across the Svētupe River.
